Wieser UUAHOUUA WIESky 7 Years - Pinot Noir
The name sounds like a yodel after three pints of beer: UUAHOUUA! But this seven-years Austrian from the Wieser distillery is actually much more reserved than its name suggests. Matured in Pinot Noir barrels, it attempts to bridge the gap between whisky and wine. Spoiler alert: it ends up somewhere in the middle and can't quite seem to make up its mind.
Tasting Notes
Nose
The nose starts with light wine notes, as if someone had spat a sip of Pinot Noir into the distance. Strong oak dutifully reports for duty, accompanied by malty earthiness and a hint of honey. So far, so classic. Then it gets strange: a note like a slightly rotten organic waste bin creeps in. Yes, really. It's not disgusting, more bizarre, as if someone had briefly passed by with composted apple peels. The whole thing is rounded off by artificial raspberry, reminiscent of pink sweets from the corner shop. Authentic? No. Entertaining? Absolutely.
Palate
The mouthfeel is somewhat thin, almost as if the whisky had been diluted with politeness. White pepper sprinkles a little spice over it, light fruity notes flit by like shy mountain goats. The oak then dominates quite clearly, almost as if to say, "Look, I'm a serious whisky!" Brandy notes are reminiscent of red wine casks. Overall, it is very mild and doesn't want to hurt anyone. Mission accomplished.
Finish
The finish is like a polite Austrian who takes his leave quickly: short, sweet with raspberry, a hint of oak in the background and slightly warming. Then it's gone. You might want more, but it has already left the room.

The Pinot Noir finish is far too timid and barely dares to show any real color – a shame, as there was more character to be had. For whisky beginners, it’s a pleasant companion that doesn’t throw any surprises but also hardly sparks any enthusiasm.
