Scallywag Chocolate Edition 2023 - Douglas Laing
For the 6th time, the family-owned Douglas Laing & Co. from Glasgow is releasing the limited Chocolate Edition of the Scallywag range. 4,200 bottles of malts matured in Pedro Ximénez and Oloroso sherry casks were married to create the most chocolatey whisky possible.
Tasting Notes
Nose
The blend opens with wild berries and a handful of dates. These are joined by intense notes of dried fruit and clove. Last but not least - who would have thought it - a surge of fluffy dark chocolate mousse. On a second sniff, we detect espresso shake from the filter holder, citrus aroma and some fresh tobacco.
Palate
Exceedingly powerful and sweet with very balanced dried fruit flavours, the Scallywag, which lies somewhere between Sehrrybombe and chocolate cake, shows its prowess. A seamless continuation of the nose follows in the mouth.
Finish
With spicy oak, the blended malt finishes sweetly fruity.

With the Scallywag Chocolate Edition 2023, you don’t just get a whisky, but a small taste experience full of chocolate and dried fruits – perfect for anyone who loves bold and sweet flavors. However, if you’re just starting out with whisky, you might want to wait a little longer, as this dram is more of a treat for seasoned connoisseurs.

The Scallywag Chocolate Edition impresses with its harmonious balance between intense sherry notes and chocolaty sweetness, making it a solid representative of Speyside blends. Technically well-balanced, it does lack a bit of complexity in places to elevate it beyond very good.

Why is the Scallywag Chocolate Edition 2023 called a blended malt?
The Scallywag Chocolate Edition 2023 is called a blended malt because it is composed of various malt whiskies without the addition of grain whisky. This creates a complex flavor profile that unites the characteristics of the individual malts.
What role do the Pedro Ximénez and Oloroso sherry casks play in the maturation of this whisky?
The Pedro Ximénez and Oloroso sherry casks impart the whisky’s intense fruit and chocolate aromas. They provide the sweet notes of dried fruits and the distinctive chocolaty flavor that is typical for the Chocolate Edition.
How does the Chocolate Edition differ from other Scallywag releases?
The Chocolate Edition is specifically matured in sherry casks and is characterized by its pronounced chocolate aromas, which arise from the combination of Pedro Ximénez and Oloroso sherry casks. Unlike other Scallywag variants, this edition focuses more strongly on sweet and fruity notes with a distinct chocolate character.
