The Key Numbers
Rating Distribution
Most ratings fall between 75 and 85 points — the range of solid to very good whiskys. The distribution shows a slight right skew: we tend to taste whiskys that appeal to us beforehand. Scores above 90 are rare and mark truly exceptional bottlings. Learn more about our rating system.
Our Highest Rated
Marcel's highest score: 96 points for the Strathisla 24 Years by Malts of Scotland. Sascha's top pick: 95 points for the Port Ellen 1982 by Malts of Scotland.

Strathisla 24 Years (1992/2016) - Malts of Scotland
There are whiskies that you greet politely. And then there are those that walk through the door and immediately dominate the room – not through volume, but through pure, undeniable presence. The Strathisla 24 Years Old 1992/2016, bottled by Malts of Scotland at a powerful 56.2% ABV, definitely belongs to the second category. The Strathisla distillery in Keith, Speyside, may be known to many primarily as the heart of Chivas Regal, but independent bottlings like this reveal what the distillery is really capable of when given time – a lot of time. This malt was allowed to mature, philosophise, meditate and build complexity in its cask for 24 years. The result? A whisky that can be described as a "sturdy dog" – and that is definitely a compliment.
-
Port Ellen (1982) - Malts of Scotland
It's not every day that you get the chance to taste a 1982' Port Ellen (with no further age statement). So we are all the more delighted to be able to taste such a special dram. The distillery has not produced whisky since 1983, and a reopening is planned for this year. Getting hold of bottlings - especially at reasonable prices - is almost impossible at the moment.

-
Glen Scotia Double Cask
You hear a lot of good things about distilleries from the Scottish coastal town of Campbeltown in recent years. It's hard to have a conversation about Glen Scotia without someone steering the topic towards Springbank, which everyone agrees is better in every way. Is that really true?Double Cask is an NAS Scotch with Glen Scotia single malt matured in first-fill ex-bourbon casks and aged for up to a year in Pedro Ximénez (PX) sherry casks. Up to one year - a wild time specification.
-
Wild Turkey Rare Breed
Since 1991, the Rare Breed has been part of the core range of the Wild Turkey distillery. The Barrel Proof Kentucky Straight Bourbon is a blend of 6, 8 and 12 years whiskeys, and gets bottled uncut. The mashbill contains 75% corn, 13% rye and 12% malted barley - which leads us to expect a sweetish, slightly spicy whiskey. Like all bourbons, the Wild Turkey must also mature in a new, freshly burned out Virgin Oak barrel. The barrel was burned out to Char 4 level, also called Alligator Char. Char 4 is the highest char level.
-
anCnoc 12 Years
The Highland malt AnCnoc is produced by the Knockdhu distillery. Supposedly they do not bottle under their own name to avoid confusion with Knockando. Today we have the 12 years and youngest bottling of the core range in the glass.
-
Glendronach The Hielan 8 Years
Since 2015, The Hielan 8 Years has been the entry into the standard range of single malt whiskies from the Glendronach distillery. By the way: Hielan is a Scottish word that refers to the mountainous part of Scotland that lies to the north and west of a line that runs roughly from Dumbarton via Ballater and from there to Nairn.

Marcel vs. Sascha
Sascha rates 0.7 points higher on average than Marcel. For most whiskys, we're closely aligned. The Talisker 18 Years is our highest-rated whisky with perfect agreement: both scored 91 points.
The biggest disagreement was on the Rock Island Small Batch by Douglas Laing — a full 24-point gap between Marcel (55) and Sascha (79):
-
Rock Island Small Batch Release - Douglas Laing
This blend of the famous independent bottler Douglas Laing offers us a composition of the characteristic and absolutely unmistakable aromas of the Hebrides.Douglas Laing provides us with independently bottled blends. Founded back in the 1940s, Douglas Laing distributes a variety of different series in which single malts are blended and thematically ordered. Within the Remarkable Regional Malts, Rock Island represents the Scottish islands. Fun Fact: Originally distributed as Rock Oyster, the bottling was renamed to Rock Island, as oysters had a negative connotation for many customers.
-
Talisker 18 Years
Talisker is known for harmonious Whiskys. Not too much of anything, no aroma fights its way to the fore. These characterful Whiskys have been distilled on the Isle of Skye on the west coast of Scotland for almost 200 years."Made by the Sea" is the motto under which Talisker is distilled and marketed. The entire marketing strategy is based on this principle. This fits wonderfully, because the maritime notes can also be directly assigned during blind tasting. It doesn't matter whether we have Talisker 8, Talisker 10 or Talisker 18 in the glass. Talisker always has a special signature, a real character - rough seas in a glass. The 18 years takes this signature to a perfectly balanced composition.
