Our selection

In selecting our value-for-money winners, we focused on whiskies that are regularly available in stores, regardless of whether they are original bottlings or independent bottlings. We include both original bottlings and independent bottlings. Whether smoky or sweet, mild or spicy - every category has whiskies with excellent value for money.

Original bottlings

Whiskies bottled directly by the distillery.

Independent bottlings

Whiskies selected and bottled by independent bottlers.

What does good whisky cost?

Below 35 euros, it is really difficult to find a good whisky, let alone a very good one. If you increase your budget per bottle to 50 euros, you will find suitable options much faster. Whiskies for getting started and exploring flavour profiles are often found exactly in this price range. For mature bottlings aged more than 15 years, prices below 50 euros are naturally less common.

What makes a good whisky?

This question can never be answered fully objectively, because taste always remains subjective. With a structured tasting within a clearly defined flavour profile, however, quality differences can be recognised very well.

A good whisky has character, a harmonious composition, exciting aromas, and at least sufficient maturity. Some bottlings still taste immature, while others are too flat and lack distinct character.

Scotch, Bourbon, Irish whiskey - which one then?

In the end, that is not the decisive factor. Scottish single malt offers enormous variety, but you can also find excellent bottlings in Bourbon, Irish whiskey, and other categories. The more openly you taste, the more you discover.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you choose value-for-money winners?

We focus on the balance between taste, overall quality impression, availability, and price level. The key question is not just how cheap a bottle is, but how much quality and enjoyment it delivers for the money.

Are only cheap whiskies included in this list?

No. The list focuses on strong value for money, not the lowest possible price. A slightly more expensive bottle can still be a winner if the quality clearly justifies the cost.

Do you include independent bottlings?

Yes. We separate original bottlings and independent bottlings so you can compare both categories more easily.

What budget range is realistic for good whisky?

For many solid entry-level and everyday whiskies, a practical range is often around 35 to 50 euros per bottle. Below that, the field gets narrower; above that, the chances of finding noticeably stronger options improve.

Does the list change when new reviews are published?

Yes. The list is based on our available reviews and can change when new candidates are reviewed or re-evaluated. That means the lineup can evolve over time.
