The Westfalian TW8
The Westfalian is releasing its first 12-years whisky today. With the cask number TW8 (yes, the 8th cask filled), the single grain is one of the first casks filled in the founding year 2012. The New Make matured in an ex. Ben Nevis Sherry Hogshead and only contains 266 bottles, as it is, as always, a cask-strength, uncoloured and unfiltered single cask bottling.
Tasting Notes
Nose
The first impression on the nose immediately reveals the typical grain note that is the hallmark of a single grain whisky. But the TW8 offers much more. The characteristic Westphalian DNA is evident in the multi-layered aromas of old leather sofa, which convey a feeling of antique luxury. Sultanas and dates lend the scent a fruity sweetness, while heavy, spicy notes of old oak and dark molasses emphasise the complexity.
Palate
In the mouth, this whisky needs a little time to fully develop. But patience is rewarded: the single grain from Paderborn is very oily and dry at the same time, with an intense dark sweetness that is reminiscent of almost red grapes and redcurrants. The cereal flavour recedes into the background and makes way for a full-bodied, fruity profile. A hint of cinnamon gum (Big Red!) rounds off the flavour experience and gives it a spicy freshness. The high ABV of 62.5% is wonderfully integrated.
Finish
The finish is medium to long and offers a pleasant, warming effect. Although it is rather light, the fruity note remains and ensures a harmonious aftertaste.
Thoughts
Marcel 80/100
The Westfalian TW8 is a true delight for anyone who loves fruity-spicy and characterful whiskies – a single grain that, with its oily texture and warm finish, really lifts the spirits. To me, it’s a young yet already very distinctive whisky that proves you can enjoy plenty of drinking pleasure even without decades of maturation.
Sascha 79/100
With its balanced interplay of fruit, spice, and the typical grain note, the TW8 impresses through its complex structure and precise cask selection. The high alcohol content is superbly integrated, so this young single grain offers remarkable depth and a harmonious finish despite its youth.

What makes The Westfalian TW8 Single Grain Whisky special compared to other German whiskies?
The TW8 is a single grain whisky from one of the very first casks of the Northoff Feinbrennerei, dating back to its founding year 2012. It matured for 12 years in a former Ben Nevis sherry hogshead, is cask strength at 62.5% ABV, non-colored and non-chill filtered, which gives it a unique complexity and depth rarely found in German whiskies.
How does the cask, an ex-Ben Nevis sherry hogshead, influence the flavor of the TW8?
The sherry hogshead imparts intense aromas of raisins, dates, and dark molasses to the whisky. These sweet and spicy notes complement the typical grain character of the single grain, giving the TW8 a multi-layered complexity with hints of old leather and oak.
How should one best enjoy The Westfalian TW8 to fully experience its aromas?
Due to its high alcohol content of 62.5%, it’s recommended to taste the whisky slowly and, if needed, dilute it with a few drops of water. This allows the fruity and spicy aromas to unfold better, making the tasting experience rounder and more approachable.
