Tasting Notes

Nose

The nose is a real adventure! Strawberries? Check. Red fruits and berries? There too. A vinous bouquet gently reminiscent of a summer evening in Tuscany. But then comes the surprise: a hint of yoghurt creeps in, paired with a delicate hint of grey bread. Yes, grey bread - and no, that's not a typo. Sounds crazy, but smells brilliant.

Palate

With the first sip, you immediately know why this whisky is fun: strawberry yoghurt, sweet and fruity, dominates the start. But before it becomes too sweet, peppery spice and a pleasant dryness bring balance. Dazu gesellen sich Karamell und Honig – wie ein Werther’s Original, aber mit Stil. Es ist, als würde man sich in einer französischen Patisserie befinden, während ein Highland-Cow einem freundlich zunickt.

Finish

The finish is of medium length and is characterised by spicy oak with a subtle winey note, reminiscent of a good glass of red wine. Perfect for anyone who likes to enjoy their whiskies with a touch of elegance.

A successful interplay of fruity Frühburgunder notes and the typical Highland structure makes this 12-years Edradour an intriguing subject for study. The balance between sweet fruitiness, peppery spice, and the elegant oak finish demonstrates how well a wine-barrel finish can shape a whisky to be both complex and harmonious.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does the Frühburgunder barrel finish influence the taste of the Edradour 2012/2024?

The Frühburgunder barrel finish gives the whisky an intense rosé hue and imprints the aroma with fruity notes of strawberries and red berries. It also adds a sweet-fruity flavor component reminiscent of strawberry yogurt, along with an elegant wine and oak spiciness on the finish.

Why does the Edradour 2012/2024 smell like rye bread and yogurt?

The unusual aromas of rye bread and yogurt arise from the combination of maturation in Frühburgunder wine casks and the natural development of flavors in the whisky. Such notes are typical for whiskies finished in wine casks and bring an interesting, slightly tangy and bready complexity to the nose.

How does the Edradour 2012/2024 differ from classic Edradour sherry cask releases?

Unlike the typical sherry cask whiskies from Edradour, which often feature heavy, dark, and sweet notes, the 2012/2024 Frühburgunder barrel finish offers a lighter, fruitier, and more elegant profile. Maturation in red wine casks imparts a fresh, rosé character and a balanced harmony of sweetness, spice, and fruity aromas.
