Glenburgie 9 Years (2015/2025) - Claxton's

Glenburgie is a true Speyside workhorse: most of its spirit has always disappeared into blends, above all Ballantine's. Official single malts are accordingly rare, which makes independent bottlings like this one all the more interesting. Claxton's drew a single cask for its Exploration Series – distilled in 2015, bottled in 2025, matured for nine years in a fresh Tawny Port barrique (cask EXP1081) at 50 % ABV. It's also a little premiere: the first joint review by our two new tasters, Florian and Lucas.

Tasting Notes

Nose

Immediate sweetness from the port cask: vanilla and caramel sweets meet molasses and a juicy note of orange. Underneath sit fine tannins that give the whole thing structure. Overall the nose feels almost rum-like – dark, sweet and treacly, more dessert than classic Speyside malt.

Palate

The palate is noticeably more straightforward: first clear sweetness, then the malty backbone of the Glenburgie, accompanied by the orange from the nose. At 50 % it holds up firmly in the glass, but stays rather simple and doesn't deliver the refinement the nose promises.

Finish

The finish turns dark: oak and dark fruit step forward, joined by cherry sweets and a clear surge of roasted notes. The shift from the sweet opening to the spicy, roasty close is the most exciting part of the dram.

Thoughts

Florian

Florian74/100 - (Very good)

An exciting transition from the nose to the finish – there's genuinely something happening in the glass. Sadly it lacks that certain something at the end that I'd expect from a fresh port cask.

Lucas

Lucas73/100 - (Very good)

An interesting nose with a classic port finish that really gets you going. A shame the palate is missing that final touch of refinement to live up to the promise.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a Tawny Port barrique and how does it shape the whisky?

A barrique is a small cask of around 225 to 300 litres whose favourable ratio of wood surface to contents lets it act especially intensely on the whisky. With maturation in fresh Tawny Port casks, the port contributes plenty of sweetness, dark fruit and treacly notes – exactly what defines the nose and finish here.

Why are there so few official Glenburgie bottlings?

Glenburgie is primarily a blend distillery and supplies most of its spirit to Chivas Brothers, above all for Ballantine's. Official single malt bottlings are therefore rare, which is why the malt is almost exclusively available neat through independent bottlers such as Claxton's.

What does single cask mean for this bottling?

Single cask means the release comes from a single barrel – here cask EXP1081 from Claxton's Exploration Series. There is no marrying with other casks, so the run is strictly limited and the character of the individual cask reaches the bottle unaltered.
