Some distilleries you have to earn. Talisker is one of them. To reach the distillery in the tiny village of Carbost on the Isle of Skye, you drive along winding single-track roads through one of the most dramatic landscapes in Scotland. But the effort pays off: right on the shore of Loch Harport, in the shadow of the Cuillin mountains, lies one of the most characterful distilleries in the country. On our visit, Skye showed its typical side, grey, windy and breathtakingly beautiful.

The oldest distillery on Skye

Talisker was founded in 1830 by brothers Hugh and Kenneth MacAskill and remains the oldest working distillery on the Isle of Skye to this day. Over almost two centuries, the distillery has preserved its unmistakable character, shaped by its rugged seaside location. Today, Talisker belongs to Diageo and is one of the most visited distilleries in Scotland.

Distillation takes place on an unusual configuration of two wash stills and three spirit stills. Characteristic are the curved lyne arms with their purifiers, which give the spirit additional copper contact. Together with the lightly peated malt, this creates the typical Talisker style.

Shaped by the sea

Hardly any whisky carries its origin so clearly in the glass as Talisker. Maritime, smoky and with that famous peppery bite, you can almost taste the salty spray of Loch Harport. The warehouses stand right by the water, where the salt-laden sea air drifts through the casks over the years, lending the whisky its coastal spice. "Made by the Sea", here, for once, the slogan is no exaggeration.

The island representative of the Classic Malts

Talisker represents the islands with its 10-year-old in Diageo's Classic Malts of Scotland, alongside the Highlander Dalwhinnie, the Lowlander Glenkinchie and the coastal malt Oban, which we visited on the same trip to Scotland. The Talisker 10 Years is the perfect entry point, while the Talisker 18 Years and the powerful Talisker Storm show just how multi-layered the island style can be.

Visitor tips

Talisker is one of the most popular distilleries in Scotland, so booking tours in advance is strongly recommended, especially in high season. The journey across Skye is part of the experience: allow plenty of time for the winding roads and the magnificent scenery. A dram of Talisker with a view over the loch while the wind howls outside, it hardly gets more Scottish than this.
