Schroll Tegelberg Laphroaig Cask
2025-04-30
Nose
The very first sniff reveals that this is no peat hammer. The smoke is there, but rather cool and subtle - like the scent of a cold campfire in the morning. This is joined by vanilla, fresh herbs, a hint of forest honey and an unripe banana, which together with a green apple bring a pleasantly fresh, almost crisp note.
Taste
In the mouth, the smokiness remains subtle - not dominant, but accompanying. There is a cool, slightly meaty texture, almost like air-dried ham, plus vanilla and a delicate citrus note that refreshes the whole maritime flavour. Anyone expecting a lump of peat here will be pleasantly surprised: the smoke remains in the background and leaves room for subtle nuances.
Finish
The finish is medium long and pleasantly soft. The smoke leaves quietly, but still leaves some BBQ flavour on the tongue. And then there is this one note - a hint of parsley.
Thoughts
The Schroll Tegelberg Laphroaig cask is not a peat monster, but a balanced bridge between Germany and Islay. It remains independent, but has the typical Islay flavours - only more subtle, finer, almost polite. A whisky for advanced drinkers who are not looking for the biggest hit of smoke, but for character, depth and craftsmanship.
