Beverbach Wheat Malt Einbecker German Beer Cask Finish

Beverbach Wheat Malt Einbecker German Beer Cask Finish

The Hardenberg distillery in southern Lower Saxony produces German whisky, which they distribute under the name Beverbach. In a regional collaboration with the Einbecker brewery, today's whisky was further matured after aging in ex-bourbon barrels in former Bock beer casks. Distilled from 100% local wheat malt, they follow a field-to-glass approach here. We're tasting what this locally sourced dram, limited to 1500 bottles and aged for 5 years, has to offer.

Tasting Notes

Nose

The aroma is exotic. We detect classic notes of green apples and pears, but they are surrounded by a pineapple gummy bear (the white ones) aroma. The wheat malt is lightly floral, and the hops, coming from the beer barrels, are distinctly present. Lighter hints of buttered toast and a touch of vanilla hover above it all.

Palate

On the palate, Beverbach Einbecker is mild, soft, and creamy. The still very light fruity notes are accompanied by a similarly light and fresh herbal quality. The creamy mouthfeel is nicely complemented by Campino candies. On the palate, as in the nose, a slightly bitter hop note emerges.

Finish

The finish is short, fresh, and sparkling. Here, the whisky lacks a bit of depth. The young age is unfortunately still noticeable.

Beverbach Wheat Malt is a charming, light treat that’s enjoyable with its sweet-fruity notes and hoppy twist, even though it still lacks depth. As a young craft whisky from the region, it’s a nice introduction, but it won’t captivate every whisky enthusiast.

The Beverbach Wheat Malt shows a solid balance between fruitiness and subtle hop bitterness, yet it remains somewhat flat in structure and complexity. Its young age of five years is noticeable in the short, fresh finish, highlighting the potential for more maturity and finesse.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does the finish in Einbecker Bockbier barrels influence the flavor of Beverbach Wheat Malt?

The finish in former Einbecker Bockbier barrels imparts delicate hop aromas and a slight bitterness, which manifest as fresh herbal and hop notes on the palate. This beer barrel maturation complements the fruity notes and provides a sparkling, fresh finish.

What does the 'field-to-glass' approach mean in the production of this whisky?

The 'field-to-glass' approach means the whisky is made from 100% locally grown wheat malt that is processed directly on site. This ensures a high level of regionality and transparency in production, which influences the quality and character of the whisky.

Why does Beverbach Wheat Malt still taste relatively young despite its aromas, and how is this noticeable?

At five years old, the whisky is relatively young, which is reflected in a rather short, slightly flat finish. It lacks complexity and depth, typical for young whiskies, as they have had less time to develop rich flavors and a long-lasting structure.
