Single Malt Yoichi
Spicy, Maritime, Costal2024-11-11
Smell
The first impression? Fruity with a hint of coast! This Yoichi single malt greets the nose with a light sweetness and subtle flavours of apple peel and honey. This is followed by an elegant floral flavour surrounded by a gentle, yet present peat smoke. If you hold your nose deep enough into the glass, you might also detect a hint of seaweed - ‘sea asparagus’, as the professionals call it. There are also exotic notes of papaya. The fragrance promises a lot and delivers a nice balance between sweet, floral and smoky elements.
Taste
When you take your first sip, you notice the beautiful, soft texture. The whisky is creamy and almost ‘light’ in mouthfeel, which makes it pleasantly accessible for beginners. In terms of flavour, we are greeted by soft vanilla notes and a certain maltiness that feels like fresh hay. There is also a slightly salty flavour that reflects the influence of the coastal climate. If you take a closer look, you will also discover floral notes that are almost reminiscent of spring meadows.
Finish
The finish is medium-long and pleasant, without excessive bitterness. A hint of smoke remains, which blends well with the slightly bitter flavour. An aftertaste that whets the appetite for the next sip and is not too intense or heavy.
Thoughts
The Yoichi single malt impresses with its perfect balance of fruity, smoky and salty flavours. It is ‘un-offensive’ and incredibly drinkable - making it ideal for beginners. You won't be overwhelmed by excessive smoke, but you will get a fine idea of how peat smoke can enrich a composition. The combination of floral and fruity elements creates a harmonious overall picture that makes the Yoichi single malt a relaxed, delicious companion.
