For the 6th time, the family-owned Douglas Laing & Co. from Glasgow is releasing the limited Chocolate Edition of the Scallywag range. 4,200 bottles of malts matured in Pedro Ximénez and Oloroso sherry casks were married to create the most chocolatey whisky possible.

Smell

The blend opens with wild berries and a handful of dates. These are joined by intense notes of dried fruit and clove. Last but not least - who would have thought it - a surge of fluffy dark chocolate mousse. On a second sniff, we detect espresso shake from the filter holder, citrus aroma and some fresh tobacco.

Taste

Exceedingly powerful and sweet with very balanced dried fruit flavours, the Scallywag, which lies somewhere between Sehrrybombe and chocolate cake, shows its prowess. A seamless continuation of the nose follows in the mouth.

Finish

With spicy oak, the blended malt finishes sweetly fruity.

Thoughts

An all-round successful experience. Chocolatey, intense and with great hand-drawn artwork, the Scallywag is very good - both on the shelf and in the mouth. Possibly unsuitable for beginners, the Chocolate Edition offers a unique twist for connoisseurs and epicures.
