Glen Elgin 12 Year Old

Floral, Nutty, Hay Like
2022-09-19
Glen Elgin, one of Scotland's lesser-known distilleries, has been distilling whisky since around 1900. After being closed several times, the distillery has been producing its own bottlings since its reopening in 1998, in addition to a lion's share which is processed in blends.
Apart from special releases and anniversary bottlings, the 12-year-old single malt is the only permanently available bottling of the distillery. A reason to try it.

Smell

The Scotch opens with hazelnuts and almonds before a fruity sweetness spreads. Notes of toffee caramel and marzipan round off the composition.

Taste

Plum and toffee are the base notes we taste. Accents of malty sweetness, marzipan and spicy oak shape the overall picture.

Finish

The medium-long finish is very dry but still pleasant. Dark chocolate with a touch of oak.

Thoughts

Very accessible, balanced, and wonderfully dry is the classic of the Glen Elgin distillery in the Scottish Speyside. The single malt manages the balancing act between an initially sweet to a spicy, powerful and at the same time dry aroma profile wonderfully. A typical Speyside start with a turn towards a somewhat more intense and spicy aroma.

Rating: 74/100 - Very Good (Marcel: 72 | Sascha: 76)

Value for Money: 4/5 - Good
