Nose

The first impression is unusual and complex: umami notes, old leather shoes and mushrooms - that may sound daring, but it adds depth. There are also clear spicy and herbal notes reminiscent of Mediterranean cuisine. Caramel and a hint of solvent then emerge in the background.

Taste

On the tongue, the whisky shows its intense side. Oily, very dry and fruity at the same time - a mixture that creates tension. The fruitiness is present, but it does not go in the typical sherry or tropical direction, but rather remains on the dense, concentrated side. The dryness gives it a sophisticated, almost tannic structure.

Finish

The finish is earthy with notes of chilli and pepper. A pleasant warmth remains, but oak is barely noticeable - which is not surprising for a 7-year-old whisky from Australia.

Thoughts

Distilled in Australia 2024 - 7 years The Tasteful 8 is a whisky for explorers. The unusual flavour, the umami spicy profile and the dryness make it an exciting, but not necessarily simple bottling. Those looking for classic vanilla or sherry flavours will not be happy here - but if you fancy a challenging, idiosyncratic whisky with character, you should give it a chance.
