Smell

The first flavours are reminiscent of malt sweets and cream caramel, followed by sweet blossom honey. Exotic fruit notes such as plantain and papaya add an extra dimension, which is rounded off by a light vanilla sugar note. Despite this tantalising sweetness, the whisky is already slightly demanding and unpleasant on the nose.

Taste

On the palate, the Dailuaine develops a sugary sweetness accompanied by an oily texture. The flavours wet the mouth and continue to develop intensively. However, the distinct ethanol sharpness makes the flavour somewhat rough. Fresh wood and creamy caramel again characterise the taste, while an unripe mango provides a fresh but unripe contrast.

Finish

The finish is surprisingly short. It remains juicy and is dominated by fresh oak, which is accompanied by a pleasant vanilla note. However, the brilliance that one might expect from a single cask in this category is also absent here.

Thoughts

The Dailuaine 2012/2022 #308764 is a whisky that aims to score points with its intensity and strong flavours, but comes across as a little too rough and unfinished. This whisky may find its fans who are looking for a challenge in the glass, but for many it may not offer the desired enjoyment. We would not buy it.
