Smell
The nose of Compass Box Celestial is dominated by a campfire smoke that immediately brings to mind a warm, cosy fire. A medicinal undertone gives the fragrance an interesting depth, which is complemented by caramel and maritime notes. A hint of baked apple and lime brings a sweet and citrus-fresh component into play. The nutty and tropical flavours are almost reminiscent of rum, while a subtle note of ginger pleasantly invigorates the nose.
Taste
On the palate, the blend develops a warm and campfire-like smokiness that immediately brings to mind a meaty BBQ. The multi-layered smokiness is impressive and is complemented by an intense sweetness and an oily (almost sticky) texture. The whisky is full-bodied and develops a remarkable complexity that makes every sip an experience.
Finish
The very long finish also leaves a lasting impression. The great oak is really impressive and is complemented by recurring ginger and citrus notes. The finish is voluminously smoky, with a hint of light tar and dried red fruit. A subtle bacon flavour rounds off the finish and provides a unique and long-lasting aftertaste.
Thoughts
The Compass Box Celestial could be the best Compass Box whisky ever. It really has it all: age, sherry, smoke and volume. A true masterpiece that inspires. Once again we see that it doesn't always have to be "single malt Scotch whisky" - those who have mastered the craft of blending can also create world-class bottlings!
